The smoking pipe

The smoking pipe is essentially a tool that was designed for smoking tobacco. The smoking pipes are available in various designs and varieties. The basic design of a normal pipe consists of a bowl or a chamber in which the tobacco that is to be smoked is placed. This chamber is then connected to a mouth piece through a thin pipe from which the rising fumes and smoke is inhaled. The chamber of the pipe is reusable and is not limited to a certain number of uses or also the type of tobacco.

The smoking pipe has been in use since ancient times. Various tribes and people of different countries for the purpose of smoking tobacco have used the pipe. These pipes were made out of commonly available material like wood and therefore required no skilled labor. Any craftsman would easily create a pipe and this was amongst the prime reasons for which the pipe became so popular and it’s still increasing. Various authors in their highly acclaimed books and stories have immortalized the pipe. For instance, the character of Sherlock Holmes in the highly popular series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is seen sitting next to his window with a pipe in his mouth. The character is often seen smoking his pipe. The influence was such that each and every representation of the stories involved the actor playing Sherlock Holmes to smoke a pipe.

Despite the fact that the pipe is commonly available through out the world, the pipe smoking manners and etiquettes vary for different countries of the world. Pipe smoking thus has its own manners which must be followed. The smoking pipe is the true representation of extreme intellect and posh class. The pipe smoking culture’s popularity can be judged by the fact that the United Kingdom has a civilian award that is known as the Pipe Smoker of the Year award!

Generic Drugs – Are they Identical to Branded Drugs

Generic drugs don’t just cost less than branded drugs but are identical to their branded counterparts in dosage, strength, safety, route of administration, efficacy and of course the intended use, thus making you pay just a fraction of cost than what you pay for patented brand names. Generics manufacturers can afford to sell at cheap prices for the expensive parts involving the costs of development and clinical trials of new drugs have already been borne by the inventor companies. So it is not for nothing that these are sold under non-proprietary names.

Generic drugs, similar to that of branded drugs, are also regulated and approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Their approval as ‘bio-equivalent’ drugs to their patented counterparts permit them to market them after the expiration of patent of branded drugs except for in certain cases when generics manufacturers obtain a 180 days exclusivity. The term bio-equivalent defines two different products as being bioequivalent of each other when they exhibit equivalence for all practical purposes and intents.

Does Proven Bio-Equivalence Mean Generics Are Exact Same As Branded Drugs

First off, the purpose of approval of generics as bioequivalent of their respective counterparts is to permit marketing of generics based on established safety records. This sets records straight that both generics and branded products have same active ingredients and not as having noteworthy dissimilarity in the rate and degree to which the active ingredient or pharmaceutical alternatives can be seen.

Patent Protects Branded Drugs

Patent protection accords the original developer the ‘innovator’ status with sole selling rights but the period of protection is exclusive to individual countries which differs from country to country and it can’t be renewed after once expires. If it lasts for 11 years in one country, it stays upto 20 years in some other countries providing the inventors with monopoly status for the entire duration.

Competing manufacturers apply for FDA approval to manufacture and market generic versions as patents near expiration. Another instance where this becomes applicable is when the generics manufacturers establish that the patent is neither applicable nor would it be infringed. However, the competitive generic versions are approved by US FDA subject to thorough testing by the manufacturer in the same fashion as the inventor. Whatever the case may be, generic medicines offer patients a cost effective alternative to reliable healthcare. The advantage the manufacturers of cheap drugs enjoy, little or no cost of drug discovery, absence of necessity for extensive clinical trials and the cost of brand building, is what these manufacturers are betting upon which when passed over to consumers could establish them against the strong established drug brands. Sure, it is going to be interesting as much as advantageous from the common man’s perspective.

Cigar Facts

1. How to Choose a Cigar
It is widely observed that people choose to smoke cigars of different length/taste at different times of a day. For example, an aficionado will smoke short, mild cigars during the morning, a medium one post lunch, and a stronger rich cigar after dinner. Having said that, it is a more or less a matter of taste and looks, and is mostly a personal choice.

2. Storing Cigars
When it comes to storing cigars, it must be treated like fine wine; it must be preserved in an environment that protects it from changes in climate such as humidity, temperature variations, and light and intrusive odors. Humidor case is a one-stop solution to storing cigars. Most humidors come with an inbuilt regulator that maintains the humidity in the interior at a standard 70%-72% and a temperature of 21°C.

3. Removing the Band
Since cigar bands are manually put on cigars, there is a chance of it sticking on to the wrapper, and any attempt to forcefully take it off may end up damage the cigar as such. Hence, it is advisable to leave the cigar band until at least the first-third of the cigar is burnt, by which time, owing to the heat, the glue may get hot, making it easier to remove.

What not to do when smoking

Cigarette smoking is perhaps the most addiction that grips a large part of the youth of any country. There are a large number of individuals that take up smoking almost every day in various parts of the world. Although the ever increasing number of people taking up smoking, the proper smoking technique is still something that new comers need to be taught. A large part of the younger generation of the world takes up smoking under pressure from their peers. Various teenagers take up smoking to flaunt their attitude and in order to get famous with in their peer groups. A large percentage of these new smokers and teenagers tend to not smoke properly. They do not inhale the cigarette smoke properly and as a result get laughed at. They take a ‘drag’ in such a way that the smoke of the cigarettes does not go to the lungs. The smoke stays in the mouth and as a result of which they do not get to properly experience the smoking sensation (or the proper head rush). Cigarettes are the latest fad and are expected to stay around for a long time. It has also been observed that a lot of teenagers take up smoking in order to impress members of the opposite sex. An individual who smokes should try and avoid smoking in the various public places as the people who do not smoke tend to grow extremely uncomfortable. Smoking has always been associated with a certain amount of class and intellect and a smoker should thus try and preserve that.  An individual should also not try and imitate various styles and just stay himself. Cigarettes should be smoked for the sheer joy of smoking and not just for the heck of it. The individual should also try and relish the cigarette and should thus stick to a brand that he or she likes.

Smoking is a wonderful thing!

You will find tons of people seriously reading various “Quit Smoking” articles by holding a cigar between the lips. I wonder why they are so bothered about it. Have you ever tried to change the thought a little bit and look smoking as a wonderful activity rather than cursing it all the time and looking at it as an addictive activity – of course smoking is not good for health, but can’t we just think out of the box for a moment or two?

Do you know that smoking is a fun activity and it helps the smoker indirectly? Medically it may not be good for health but you must agree that it’s a psychological pleasure. Don’t you feel better after smoking? Smoking reduces stress and helps us to relax. Don’t ever feel guilty ‘coz you are a smoker – the way mind thinks has an indirect effect on body and you may be harmed by this guilt alone rather than the nicotine itself. Smoking is a quick solution for depression – say to the cigar in your hand – let the world go to hell and let’s not talk about any damn thing. Depression is also a state of mind and more harmful than smoking at times. Smoking kills loneliness – if you are alone then the lightened cigar’s company is satisfying one. You talk to yourself, don’t you? You feel better, don’t you? Cigarettes also play significant role in bringing people together. It makes our social meeting pleasurable and we tend to gossip a bit more. Have you chit chatted with your old friend without burning a cigarette? Don’t you feel the talk more entertaining and joyful when the third partner –cigarette, joins in? Smoking helps thinking activity, it makes mind fresh-at least my neurons get to work after my date with cigarettes. Many a times I get to work in office after a cigarette or two. It makes me feel good.

If you are quitting cigarettes or are on the way to do so, or have already quit, then I have no intension to make you return back to this dizzy but satisfying world. I just wanted everyone to think a bit differently about smoking for a minute. When you enjoy, enjoy whole heartedly without any barriers, don’t think of anything else, experience the pleasure of smoking, get lost in to the world of dreams and let the brain relax a while – smoking is not a sin – think differently.

Are Cigarette Filters Effective?

Cigarette filter is a perforated piece, and it can be made up of various fibrous materials. Filters dominated the market after 1960’s as compared to non-filtered cigarettes and they still dominate. Filtered cigarettes are better than the non-filtered cigarettes because they allow some amount of fresh air to mix with the smoke before we inhale and thus the concentration of nicotine and tar inhaled is reduced. Now-a-days cigarettes are rated on the type of filters they have. Earlier, there was 100% inhalation of smoke as there were no filters but now nicotine and tar inhaled are reduced to some extent. Most of the cigarette filters are characterized by small tiny holes around the circumference of the end of the cigarette – which is nothing but the filter. You can see the holes when you unroll the filter paper and hold it in bright light. There can be more than one ring of ventilation holes – more the better for smokers. Cigarette filters are highly effective in reducing the amount of tar and nicotine entering into smoker’s lung. But we while smoking should take some precautions. The holes built around are made to make way for fresh air and to let them ventilate we need to keep them open! Of course many people hold the cigarettes in between two fingers in a way which closes the holes and thus there is less amount of fresh air inflow with each inhalation. So let the holes perform their function of mixing fresh air with the smoke and don’t cover them with your fingers or by any other means. Remember that you greatly reduce tar and nicotine entering and hence this is a very important precaution. Just as a fun activity, after smoking, try to look at the end of the cigarette which was towards your lips, did u notice a color change? Dear, cigarette filters are effective!
